Pets As Presents

Pets are often thought of when a gift-giving occasion occurs, especially for children. Before giving a pet as a present -- either to a child or an adult -- consider the following:

Don't give a pet unless specifically requested
A new furry friend can be an excellent gift, but only if the recipient truly wants it. Never give an animal because you think it would be a good gift choice. After all, you won't be providing the care and attention to the new pet, the reciepient will.

Never give a pet to a child without parental permission
Caring for a small pet can be a wonderful experience for a child, but never give an animal without permission from the parents. If the parent is unwilling to take over the pet's care if necessary, or they don't want an animal in the house, it wouldn't be a good gift.

If giving a pet to a child, make sure the animal is a good "kid pet"
Some pets aren't good choices for a young child. Make sure the animal is appropriate.

Be sure the recipient will be able to provide adequate care for the new pet
Some pets require a lot of care. They wouldn't be a good choice for a child or someone with limited time. Also, be sure the cost of caring for a new pet will not overly burden the recipient. Finally, make sure the recipient has the knowledge to care for this new critter.

Provide housing, food, bedding, and accessories
Don't give a hedgehog in a shoe box or a chinchilla in a pet carrier. Include enough food and bedding to last at least a couple weeks. And you, or other gift-givers, should provide all the necessary basics. Don't forget a nest box, water bottle, exercise wheel, and some cage toys.

Consider a gift certificate, not an animal
Not only is this easier for you, it also allows the recipient to choose the pet. This initial connection can be an important part of the animal/human bond which develops. If you want something that can be unwrapped, give housing, food, cage toys or books. These are items which will be needed anyway.
