Brushtail Phalangers

The phalanger, also called a brushtail possum, is a member of the marsupial family. When full grown, they weigh 10 to 12 pounds.

Brushies are found throughout Australia, as well as Tasmania and many other nearby islands. They can also be found in New Zealand, where they were introduced by humans about 100 years ago.

Brushtail phalangers have large ears, small dark eyes and extremely soft fur which varies in color from gray to rust red. They have a brush-like tail which is prehensile, but not weight bearing. The tip half of the tail's underside is bald to provide greater grip.

Phalangers have unusual feet. All four feet have five digits. However, the first toe on each back foot is clawless, but opposable. The second and third toes on each back foot are joined to the knuckle and used primarily for grooming.

Phalangers feed primarily on leaves, flowers and fruits, as well as a wide variety of grasses and other herbaceous plants. Due to this diet low in nutrients, they have a low metabolic rate and a fairly sedentary lifestyle. In fact, adults spend up to half their waking time inactive.
