There are five species of prairie dog. Sandy brown in color, all prairie dog species are about 10 to 12 inches in body length, with a short tail. They weigh from 3 to 3 1/2 pounds.
Members of the ground squirrel family, prairie dogs are extremely social animals. Most people know of prairie dogs for the "prairie dog towns" they build and live in. These towns can be quite large. In fact, some have been known to cover up to 25,000 square miles.
Extremely intelligent, prairie dogs have one of the most complicated non-human languages known.
